December 23, 1964 - Image on the left - Newspaper Caption - Growing as a first step towards keeping its class 5 fire insurance rating the Whitehaven fire department has doubled the manpower at its station at 819 Raines Rd. to eight-men and more than doubled the square footage of the station. Whitehaven also plans to add another station in the near future giving the community.

 << Deputy Chief E. C. Yarbro conducts a WUD fire department class while C. R. Jernigan, Billy Wakefield, Merlin Harris and Roy Prichard take notes.  All WUD firemen are required to g=have a minimum of one hour of classwork and instruction each day.  Fire fighting is a highly technical profession and special studing is necessary to keep abreast of the rapidly changing methods and technology. 

The WUD Fire Department provides a community service by administering emergency first aid.  C. R. Jernigan and Robert Wright Jr. install a sign in front of Fire Department Headquarters at 1253 Holmes Road.
